Gardens of Rome and Tuscany
September
19-29, 2010

The central Italian regions of Lazio and Tuscany are blessed with an abundance of wonderful gardens, beautiful scenery, medieval hilltop towns, and historic monuments.  We search out the best of these on this 10-day tour, which starts in Lazio, to the north of Rome, where we visit the great Renaissance gardens at Palazzo Farnese, Castello Ruspoli, and Villa Lante, one of the world's great gardens.  We then travel through Tuscany's scenic countryside, visiting the private villas of La Foce and Cetinale and exploring the well-preserved historic cities of Siena and Lucca, with its impressively intact tree-topped city walls.  In Florence we visit the elegant hillside gardens of Villa Gamberaia, Villa Medici, and Villa Capponi and enjoy free time to explore the city's rich art and architectural heritage.  On the final leg of the tour we visit world class gardens near the capital Rome, including the romantic gardens of Ninfa, the spectacular water gardens of Villa D'Este, and the English-style Giardini della Landriana, in part designed by  Russell Page.  Other highlights include visits to the superbly maintained Vatican Gardens, a tranquil green oasis in the bustling city, and the wonderful gardens at Villa Reale di Marlia, a longtime personal favorite.  Accommodation will be in comfortable, well-located hotels in Civita Castellana, the stunning Tuscan countryside, Florence, and Rome.

September 22 (Wednesday) -- Parco dei Monstri, Bomarzo and La Foce
On leaving Civita Castellana we head north to Tuscany, stopping en route at Bomarzo to see the fascinating 16th century Parco dei Monstri, with its strange lopsided buildings and huge sculptures of creatures and mythical monsters.  We then journey to the Renaissance-style gardens at Villa La Foce, described by one garden writer as 'a green oasis in the barren Siena countryside, with elegant walled enclosures, soaring cypress walks, native cyclamen and box-edged beds, flowerbeds, lawns, and wildflower meadows.'  On leaving La Foce, we continue to our hotel in the Tuscan countryside.  (B,D)
